Leveled Reader Cards

Leveled Reader Cards are two-sided, either single or gate folded cards, that delivers cross-curricular lessons to students. I was given a manuscript and a blank canvas. I owned the entire creative process, from concept, photo research, to final.

Native American Tribes in Florida is for grade 4 students. The content, both text and half of the art, were repurposed from a past social studies program, circa 2000s. Our original plan was to pick up all of the art from the old program and supplement it with stock photos and commissioned art in a similar style. Our original plan met with some difficulties that required quick problem-solving. In picking up the art of Chief Carlos, we discovered that it was historically inaccurate. In addition, the museum that owned the photos of tools and food shut down due to COVID-19, making it impossible to obtain permission to reuse those images before our deadline. Lastly, all the photos we could find of the conch mound resembled a pile of human skulls, making them inappropriate for young readers. We came up with plan B: hire an artist who specializes in the specific Native American tribe to render a culturally relevant depiction of Chief Carlos (the background scene is pick up art from old book) and commission illustrations of the tools, food, and conch mound to replace the problematic photos.
