Leveled Reader Card

Leveled Reader Cards are two-sided, either single or gate folded cards, that delivers cross-curricular lessons to students. I was given a manuscript and a blank canvas. I owned the entire creative process, from concept, photo research, to final.

Florida, Before and After the Civil War is for grade 4 students. The content, both text and images were repurposed from a past social studies program, circa 2000s. I set these into a more modern setting by using color blocking. The black and white historical photos were all squared up in the original layout. I infused life into these figures by silhouetting and colorizing each figure. The image of Thomas Fortune (to the right of drum boy) is actually art we commissioned. We were unable to obtain legal rights to use his portrait, so the idea came to hire an artist who does historical portraits. The art came in very clean and refined so I requested that he add grains and distress the art to match the rest of the figures on this page on the page.
