Short Read
Short Read is a short article that introduces the theme or topic of a unit. While these articles are part of a Reading program, their content often covers cross-curricular topics, such as science or social studies.
Storm Report was an interesting case. The model shoot specification called for a girl with long, flowing hair blowing in gust of wind. When she showed up with freshly cut short hair, we had to be creative on the spot. We had her lie on the floor against a white back drop. Then we combed her hair over to the side and shot the images. Later, I Photoshopped a new hairdo from a stock image to create this final look. In addition, I found that stock photos of storms were very gray and gloomy, so I illustrated the background to make this spread bright and welcoming for a first grader.
